Data centres
The defining features are constant high load and no tolerance for downtime. Unlike a retail or office service that peaks and falls, a data hall runs near steady state, so load loss matters far more than no load loss and the efficiency calculation inverts. Units are typically 1500 to 3000 kVA, frequently 12470 or 34500 volts primary to 480Y/277, and almost always installed in redundant pairs so either can carry the load. K factor or harmonic rated construction is often specified because the rectifier front ends of IT power supplies draw non sinusoidal current.
Solar farms
Here the transformer steps up rather than down, taking inverter output at 480 or 600 volts to distribution voltage at 12470 or 34500. That is the opposite of normal distribution duty. Solar units also cycle daily from zero to full and back, which is thermally harder than steady load, and they sit idle every night while remaining energised, so no load loss runs against zero revenue. Ester fluid is common on solar sites for the fire rating and because a spill in a field is an environmental event.
EV charging
Charging sites are defined by extreme load swings. A bank of DC fast chargers can go from nothing to several hundred kilowatts in seconds and back again. Ratings are usually 300 to 1500 kVA depending on how many stalls and whether they are 150 kW or 350 kW units. The specification questions that matter are impedance, because it governs voltage dip on a sudden load step, and harmonic content from the charger rectifiers.
What these three share
All of them are growing faster than the transformer supply base, all of them tend toward larger ratings than traditional commercial work, and all of them are sensitive to lead time in a way a normal building project is not. Order earlier than the schedule suggests.
Common questions
What kind of transformers do data centers use
Typically 1500 to 3000 kVA liquid filled pad mounted units, 12470 or 34500 volts primary to 480Y/277 secondary, installed in redundant pairs. K factor or harmonic rated construction is common because IT power supplies draw non sinusoidal current.
What type of transformer is required for an EV charging station
Usually a 300 to 1500 kVA three phase pad mounted unit, sized by the number and rating of the chargers. Impedance matters more than usual because it governs voltage dip when a bank of fast chargers steps on, and harmonic content from the rectifiers should be accounted for.
What transformer does a solar farm use
A step up transformer taking inverter output at 480 or 600 volts to distribution voltage, typically 12470 or 34500. Ester fluid is common for the fire rating and environmental reasons, and daily cycling from zero to full load is harder thermally than steady duty.
Why do data center transformers differ from normal commercial ones
Because the load is constant rather than peaky. Load loss dominates instead of no load loss, which changes which unit is cheapest to run, and redundancy means each transformer must be able to carry the full load alone.
