What a mobile substation actually is
A transformer, switchgear, protection and often a control cabinet mounted on a trailer, built so it can be driven to site, set, connected and energised in days rather than months. Ratings usually run from a few MVA up to around 30 MVA. Utilities keep them on standby for storm restoration and for holding a feeder up while a permanent substation is rebuilt underneath it.
When it is the right call
Three cases carry almost all of the use. A failed transformer with a replacement lead time measured in years. A planned rebuild where the load cannot be dropped for the duration. And a new load that arrives before the permanent service is energised, which is increasingly common on data centre and industrial sites where the building is finished long before the utility work is.
Mobile substation against a rented pad mounted unit
They solve different problems and the cost difference is large. A mobile substation is transmission or subtransmission class equipment and is priced accordingly. If the gap is on the low voltage side of the network, a rented or stocked pad mounted transformer does the same job for a fraction of the money. Work out which side of the transformation the gap actually sits on before pricing anything.
What the quote has to include
The monthly rate is rarely the number that decides the cost. Mobilisation and demobilisation, freight in both directions, permits and escorts for an oversize load, the connection scope on both sides, commissioning and testing, damage liability, minimum term and any buyout credit all belong on the quote in writing. On a short hire the mobilisation line frequently exceeds the rent.
The crossover worth checking first
Past roughly twelve to eighteen months, cumulative rental approaches the cost of buying and you still own nothing at the end. Before committing to anything long, price a purchase alongside it, including from stock at a premium. On the distribution side that comparison often lands in favour of buying outright.
